What EAT. LIFT. THRIVE. Means To Me

3 simple yet complex words with such a history for me.

I was so inspired the second I saw this tank top to 1) not only ROCK it because it’s what I believe but 2) share what these 3 words mean to me at 28 years old…

My first eating disorder was when I was 10. I had severe anxiety which led me to “controlling” my food in order to be in control of something (which at the time, gives you peace). I listened to anything I heard on TV like “don’t eat after 6pm” which is a myth but, my 10 year-old-self would have massive anxiety if I ate anything at 6:01pm.

I was ruled by a clock & my anxiety. I went to therapy for years & it truly saved me with the amazing support of my family.

In college, EAT took on a whole new anxiety. I wanted to look a certain way & I would go to some extreme measures to do it. Put myself on a “diet” that I knew nothing about doing & worked out 2-3 times a day in order to attain “abs” or “perfection”.

Guess what? I got abs..along with some of the most unhealthy moments of my life. Hair falling out, gut issues, pigheadedness, no menstrual cycle, & I was far from “thriving.”

My light bulb moment was when I was student teaching & realized I was telling them to fuel their bodies yet I wasn’t.

How would I be a role model to these students that I was so passionate about teaching?

I started to slowly incorporate more food & less workouts & it took TIME.


Years of challenging myself daily to eat a bit more & love myself for who I was without chasing perfection.

Now, I eat to FUEL.


This was a smoked salmon fritatta at breakfast with mamacakes
when I was visiting home! (First Watch Cafe is the BEST!)

I have a nutrient dense base with no foods off-limit (if I want a donut, cookie, etc. I EAT it because life’s too short not to enjoy in a moderation that works for you) it took a long time but it’s such a big milestone for me.

I LOVE lifting & being strong. I also love knowing that I can always improve & get STRONGER.

I love challenging myself yet not crushing myself with cardio as a safety net. I lift multiple days a week & then throw in bodyweight movements & classes because I truly ENJOY them.

Finding a balance of lifts, intensity, & rest/recovery is something I’m always finding for myself.

For too long I took lifting & eating to an extreme and I believe it’s so important to be CONSISTENT and NOT extreme.

Do what you ENJOY to be strong & feel awesome.

Hello my friends!! Gosh…where does time go!? Already Spring… (yet we still have snow on the ground). Gotta love the East Coast! ;]

It’s true — I’ve been a little MIA on social media & blogging lately….but for good reason.

I have a new lady in my life & her name is Kita (#kitacakes)!

My heart is so full … we’ve adopted an absolute sweetheart, with long legs like her mama, that has already changed our lives in so many ways.

This little girl was found on the streets of Mississippi as a young pup. Thanks to some awesome support of being approved for an emotional support animal where we live & the non-profit @canine_commitment, was fostered & cared for before finding her way to us in perfect timing.


They, at first, said she was a boxer & beagle mix but the vet thinks beagle & some kind of hound mix? I’d love to find out!


She also loves broccoli like her mama ;]


I figured I’d put her first 1) because she’s adorable & 2) you’ll be seeing her in the background of my pictures now and you may have wondered who she was ;] <3 more to come on her! xo


So let’s get to some of my other favorites over this last month, shall we?!

1) NOW FOODS new Organic Plant Protein!


Okkkkk this may be one of my TOP choices from NOW. I lean towards plant proteins as my daily protein shakes and these did not disappoint.

Kita obviously wishes that she could have some too ;]

2)  Munk Pack Protein Cookies & Oatmeal Squeeze Packs


Ok y’all these are SO good. There are a ton of different protein cookie options out there but I love that these are plant based! They are super moist and delish.


Plus, look at those chunks! ;]


Munk Pack also sent me their Oatmeal Fruit Squeeze’s which are honestly perfect for someone like me who is on the go and may need a “meal” or snack in between a workout, a client, and then a group class.

3) Carrington Organic Milled Flax


I’ve been a fan of flax for years due to it’s high omega & fiber content. I love adding it in recipes or oatmeal!

Funny story — I found a killer magic bar recipe from BakeToBeFit’s newsletter (she’s amazing!) and I needed flax…but was out….UNTIL I remembered that Carrington sent me over these samples & they saved the day! ;]


4) Nuzest Clean Lean Protein Bars

The week we got Kita…I was running around like crazy just getting used to having a new pup and getting her into the vet, etc. so these SAVED ME! I’m pretty sure I finished everything they sent me within a week.

Protein Power Chocolate Bark with Great Lakes Gelatin Collagen!

Happy Tuesday, my friends!

Ok I’m cutting RIGHT to the chase — who loves chocolate as much as I do? (raise your hand proud y’all!)

With Valentines day right around the corner…aka tomorrow…I thought I’d bring to you a powerful chocolate bark with PROTEIN!

And the best part? You literally can’t taste the protein.

To add power to my traditional chocolate bark recipe, I added in Collagen Hydrolsate Powder in partnership with my friends at Great Lakes Gelatin for a tasteless boost of protein!

This was SO easy to add in & mixed so smoothly right into the melting chocolate.


I took 2 bars of organic chocolate (1 unsweetened & 1 extra dark because I love dark chocolate) but you could use any chocolate that you like to melt down!
I then put them into a stainless steel bowl over a double boiler (just a pan underneath on the stove with about 2 inches of water on a low simmer to heat the stainless steel bowl on top) to melt the chocolate bars.


Once melted, I added in:
80 grams of Great Lakes Gelatin Collagen Powder (about 8 servings)
Sea Salt to taste
splash of vanilla extract
optional 2 small drops of organic orange oil (SO good with chocolate)

I used a whisk to combine the ingredients into the melted chocolate and once combined, poured onto a wax paper lined small cookie sheet.

I sprinkled the melted chocolate with pumpkin seeds, cranberries, & a bit more pink salt for more texture but that part is optional, of course!


Pop into the fridge (and store in the fridge) for about 20-30 minutes until set and then break into bark pieces to enjoy!


Not only do you get a boost of protein in this chocolate, but incorporating collagen on a daily basis can have so many benefits!

*As we age (even through our mid-twenties!) our bodies will start to lose their natural ability to repair connective tissue, bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, blood cells, skin, tissue, hair and nails. (Crazy right?!)

Happy Tuesday, friends!

“When one door closes, another door will open”.

Yesterday I did a thing…I filmed a video for YouTube to answer the top question I get asked over the last few years.

“What is the story behind POWERCAKES and do you have anything to do with the pancake mix?”

If you’ve got 25ish minutes to listen — #oops … I hope you will & get some motivation out of it.

I was anxious leading up to it because I’ve never shared or addressed it on social media & I’ve truly moved passed it …. but I knew I wanted to share my story, get it off my chest, & share how I actually LEARNED so much from this experience, because that is so important to know.

Years ago I learned a tough lesson & it tested me as a person & made me question my path because I was so passionate about it … but I was open to what the true meaning of this meant for me.

Now, years later, this setback set me up to find my passion in life, to be a personal trainer, & help people daily.

I have no hard feelings or anger…I don’t live my life like that & I’m actually so thankful for the experience as it was a stepping stone to where I am now.

I realized this name doesn’t define who I am….it is a part of me but not ALL of me.

If you ever feel defeated, know that there is a reason behind it & another door WILL open as long as you’re OPEN to it.

1) It’s FITNESS CHALLENGE TIME here are our local rec center! I’m so happy to be a part of this for the 2nd year now and being around such motivating people!

A few of us instructors lead classes throughout the week that are part of the challenge and we have over 100 people signed up this year to join us!

2) Coobie Seamless Bras


Ok, let me be honest….since I’m in a sports bra every single day for work, anything with a wire just doesn’t happen over here. Even when I wear a nice sweater or top, I tend to lean towards these seamless bras with a little padding instead of an underwire bra. #teamcomfort

I got neutral colors to go under most of my “not workout clothes” tops ;] & I loved the strapless version too!

Happy Wednesday, friends! I hope you’re having an awesome start to your NEW YEAR!

I had to post about something that literally JUST happened a few minutes ago when I was spending some time with my friend Jen this morning…

I’m still in PA visiting family & I’m subscribed to a local gym here for text messages because I like to use their facility for massages whenever I’m home…and as Jen & I are standing there saying goodbye, I get a text that says “Feeling Fat? Join today!”

We looked at each other and thought…gosh, they could’ve used some different wording to maybe POSITIVELY MOTIVATE people to get active instead of instantly going to “feeling fat? join the gym.”

For some reason that just rubbed me the wrong way as I try so hard to help people realize that they are so much more than what their body looks like & that simply MOVING and how you FEEL is everything …

and! it will also be the reason why you stay motivated because you FEEL GOOD.

You know I’m all heated when I type in CAPS LOCK EVERYTHING ;]

But for real….just wanted to get on here to remind you that you are SO much more than how you look….you need to commit to FEELING good and taking care of yourself physically AND mentally… and that will be different for everyone when it comes to fitness.

Speaking of this — another topic I wanted to chat about with all of the New Years buzz is that taking a break or listening to your body is OK y’all.

Over this break being home for holidays I definitely haven’t been training as consistent as usual in the gym … AND that’s OK.

In 2 weeks I’ve probably trained 3-4 times & in years past I would totally beat myself up over not working out for days while home.

AND trust me, those thoughts sometimes creep back in … but each year, things get put into more perspective and I’m able to manage those thoughts even better.

We travel between our families over the 2 weeks we are home since Corey & I are from different towns about 1.5 hours from each other. We spend a few days in one town and then a few in the other trying to make sure we see our loved ones and friends.

I get to do things like babysit my nephew….


& see my family and friends …


First time doing a paint night, loved it!

So, sometimes training isn’t at the top of the priority list.

Now, I love training & how it makes me feel so if it works into the schedule while we’re home, we go! But if not, I just remember that my body will totally pick back up after a break & if anything, will probably feel even better because of the rest I’ve given it.


Yesterday Corey and I got in a session before we went to visit a friend and our training lasted about 45 minutes! It felt great to lift again and even better to be in & out in 45 minutes.

In the past I used to be obsessed with working out for an hour or even more as if it was a “magic” amount of time I had to be in the gym … & don’t get me wrong, sometimes my training sessions do go longer if I’m really in the zone & lose track of time or I’m taking a group class … & sometimes they don’t and last 30 minutes— and that’s OK.

I truly believe in putting in your effort with each set & connecting to the muscle or movement that you are working instead of just going through the motions and watching the clock tick to make sure you’re in the gym for a certain amount of time.

My girl @alessandrascutnik justttt posted about this because this was a big topic we just chatted about recently when I went to visit her.

We chatted about where we’re at with training & how much more we really focus on that “mind-muscle connection” and the PURPOSE of each move then we did back in the day when we first started training.

So this year, instead of feeling pressure to be doing something everyone else is or not “doing enough”….don’t be afraid to safely challenge yourself in the gym & try not to get too fixated on the amount of time you spend in the gym but the QUALITY of time you spend in the gym.

There is no magic amount of time to be in the gym and everyone’s sessions will look different — just do something you enjoy and get your motivation to FEEL good.
